Carlo Ancelotti unveiled as the new Chelsea manager insists John Terry at Stamford Bridge

John Terry is staying at Chelsea insists club’s new manager Carlo Ancelotti .

Carlo Ancelotti has been officially unveiled as the new Chelsea manager and immediately insisted that captain John Terry would be staying at Stamford Bridge

The Italian, holding his first press conference said: “John Terry is a symbol of this team.

“I don’t think there will be many changes. Chelsea is a great team now, a team that did five semi-finals in six years in Champions League now. If we can improve this it will be better for me and for the club.” Carlo Ancelotti was unveiled as Chelsea’s fifth manager in two years and moved to end speculation over John Terry’s future by insisting he would captain the club forever despite reports linking the England defender with a move to Manchester City.

“He will be captain next season. He said he wants to stay forever and we want to keep him for ever.

“Now there is a question of Manchester City, but for Terry (there is) no price.

“Terry will be at Chelsea forever.

“He said he wants to stay, there is no problem for him for us, the story continues - Chelsea and Terry.

“I like to have a captain like Terry, he is very close to (Paulo) Maldini for professionalism, for quality and he will be the best captain for Chelsea.

“I spoke with Terry a month ago when I came to the club and he said welcome. And after he went on holiday.

“I will speak with him because he is the captain and I want a good relationship with the captain.”

When asked if the club would offer Terry a new, improved contract, he added: “It’s not my problem.”

But Ancelotti refused to confirm Portuguese stars Deco and Ricardo Carvalho would be leaving Chelsea despite the pair being heavily linked with the Inter Milan of former boss Jose Mourinho.

Ancelotti, who insisted in conducting the press conference in English, insisted that Terry was not available at any price and likened him to Paolo Maldini, his former captain at AC Milan.

“I think that John Terry is a symbol of this team,” said Ancelotti, before briefly shocking the assembled media when he added: “I don’t know if he will be the captain next season.”

Then, quickly, he added: “Naturally I joke, he will be captain next time.”

And Ancelotti claimed Terry has given assurances, adding: “He said he wants to stay forever at Chelsea and we want to keep him forever.

“Now there is the question for Manchester City, the price, but for Terry no price. There is no price for Terry. Terry will be captain of Chelsea forever.

“He said he wants to stay, there is no problem for him, for us the story continues: Chelsea and Terry.

“I like to have a captain like Terry, I think Terry is very close to Maldini, for professionalism, for quality and I think he will be the best captain for Chelsea.”

Ancelotti insisted no player was bigger than the club, adding: “There is not a player than can be a team. A lot of great players can make a great team, it’s normal. They must work together and have the same objectives.

“I am very happy to start a new adventure, a new opportunity and I want today to speak English. I am learning English and for me it is important to speak the questions slowly.

“I think that in on month or two months I will speak better. It’s not easy but I want to do this because I am in England now and I want good relations with all the press. I want to have respect with your work.”

Ancelotti also confirmed that Yuri Zhirkov has completed his £18 million signing from CSKA Moscow but refused to name other players who could be arriving.

“If there is a good situation for us we can do something to improve the team but I don’t want to speak about other players.”

And regarding the futures of Ricardo Carvalho and Deco, he said: “Carvalho and Deco are Chelsea players. If in the future a player wants to go they have to speak with us and we take the right decision for the player and for us.

Christian Ronaldo unveiled as Real Madrid’s new number 9

Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo is unveiled as Real Madrid’s new No. 9 .

“I have made my childhood dream a reality — to play for Real Madrid,” Ronaldo told the packed stands.

“I am just so happy to be here,” he said to a rapturous reception from the gathered thousands. “I really didn’t expect a jam-packed stadium — this is truly impressive.”

Part coronation, part Papal Mass, with a dash of rock concert thrown in. Eighty-five thousand Real Madrid fans on Monday night attended the church of Cristiano Ronaldo at the Bernabeu before 50 or so delirious stage invaders chased him from it. It only served to add to the atmosphere. This was the ascension of Cristiano.

Ronaldo is the fourth major signing of the close season by Real, as the club, fueled by the financial muscle of returning president and property magnate Florentine Perez, aims to recapture the glory that has seen them win more European Cups than any other side.

The transfer of Brazil’s Kaka and defender Raul Albiol was followed by the arrival of French striker Karim Benzema from Lyon on Thursday as Perez assembles a second wave of “galacticos,” following his previous success with big-names such as David Beckham and Zinedine Zidane.

Benzema’s transfer fee is reported to be in the region of $60 million, taking Madrid’s spending to an astonishing $300 million this in recent months.

Perez claimed Monday’s event “might not have a precedent.” “We are very satisfied to know that you made the firm decision to play for Real Madrid,” Perez said.

He told Ronaldo what to expect from his new adoring fans, adding: “They will ask of you the very best, but will also give you their all.”

The attendance at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium swamped the estimated 55,000 that watched Kaka’s unveiling last Tuesday, and is believed to be the biggest turnout for a presentation since a reported 75,000 saw the arrival of Diego Maradona at Napoli from Barcelona in 1984.

Earlier, Ronaldo successfully completed his medical with Madrid after landing in the Spanish capital just after midday.

Carlos Diez, Real Madrid’s medical chief, told www.realmadrid.com: “(Ronaldo) is in perfect condition and very eager to start the season as soon as possible.”

Ronaldo had already undergone initial medical tests with the Spanish giants while on holiday in Portugal last month, which the player claimed at the time had gone “perfectly”.

Diez added: “He has an extraordinary cardiac and lung capacity. We have complemented everything that we already did in Portugal and done all the specific tests.

After three long years of waiting, Madrid have their man, and their man has Madrid. “This is my new home,” he said. As if the six-year £200,000-a-week contract was not greeting enough, he has the sight of a stadium genuflecting in his image to greet him. Welcome home.

He has left home before, of course, but he insists it was with the blessing of his scorned father. “It was a happy goodbye,” he said. “Sir Alex Ferguson knew I always wanted to play for Madrid. I went to Manchester and spoke with him and he was happy. The fans, my team-mates and friends, and Sir Alex understand my decision. This is my dream.

For a man desperate for adulation, for worship, it was the debut he had dreamed about. Fans queued for hours to get inside, with a further 10,000 locked out when the gates to the stadium shut at 8.40pm. They chanted his name, they cheered the video montages – never again will Stoke City feature so prominently at the Bernabeu – and they waited.

And waited, just as they have since his Madrid dream was first made public in 2006, in the aftermath of Portugal’s fractious win over England in the World Cup. First, Alfredo di Stefano and Eusebio appeared. Then Perez himself, never a man to shun a moment in the limelight, strode out. Then, to the strains of Strauss and Puccini – with a dash of Spanish heavy metal thrown in – Ronaldo, bedecked in white, the No 9 on his back, appeared. The fervour reached religious proportions.

He strode onto the pitch, blinded by thousands of flashbulbs, hugged Perez and stood on stage, to the left of Eusebio and Di Stefano, consciously in the pose of Superman, hands on hips, eyes heavenwards, as Perez introduced “one of the greatest players of all time”.

To the Real Madrid president, his £80 million capture can “make millions of dreams come true,” representing “the unstoppable force of hope.” It was the sort of rhetoric of which such an occasion deserved.

No wonder, when he finally spoke, Ronaldo was forced to wait as the cheers, the chants of “Cristiano” died down. He beamed, soaking up the adulation which, almost as much as the multi-million pound salary, tempted him to leave Old Trafford.

He craves undiluted worship. Now, heightened by the will-he, won’t-he soap opera of the last three years, he has it.

“Good evening,” he said, in accented Spanish. “I am going to speak to you like a friend who is very happy to be here. This is the completion of my boyhood dream, to be a Real Madrid player.” Portugal attacker Christian Ronaldo has been unveiled as Real Madrid’s new number 9, in front of 80,000 passionate fans at the Santiago Bearable stadium, after his world record $130 million move from Manchester United.

Beckham “Uncommitted” by LA team-mate

Beckham, 33, spent a spell on loan at AC Milan last season, and Donovan believes he has let Galaxy down.

Donovan said: “All that we care about is that he committed to us. As time has gone on, that has not been the case on the field or off the field.”

Beckham’s spokesman told the BBC he had no comment to make in response.

Landon Donovan (left) and David Beckham Donovan takes over as captain of LA Galaxy when Beckham is not there

National skipper Donovan, who led the United States to the final in South Africa last weekend, said in a new book due out later this month that Beckham had been a negative influence since his high-profile move to the Major League Soccer outfit two years ago.

Beckham’s arrival was supposed to help lift the profile and standards of the U.S. league, but he has struggled to make an impact.

Donovan said Beckham, who brokered a loan move to AC Milan last season, had shown little interest in the Galaxy since coach Ruud Gullit resigned in August last year.

“All that we care about at a minimum is that he committed himself to us,” Donovan says in The Beckham Experiment, authored by Sports Illustrated writer Grant Wahl.

“As time has gone on, that has not proven to be the case in many ways — on the field, off the field. Does the fact that he earns that much more money come into it? Yeah. If someone’s paying you more than anybody in the league, more than double anybody in the league, the least we expect is that you show up to every game, whether you are suspended or not. Show up and train hard, show up and play hard.”

Donovan, who leads the Galaxy in Beckham’s absence, also cast doubt on the 34-year-old midfielder’s leadership abilities.

“Maybe he’s not a leader, maybe he’s not a captain,” he said. “Fair enough. But at a minimum, you should bust your ass every day. That hasn’t happened. And I don’t think that’s too much for us to expect. Especially when he’s brought all this on us.”

Beckham has brought in bigger crowds, but has made little impact on the playing field for LA since his surprise, big-money move from Real Madrid, with the Galaxy failing to make the end-of-season play-offs despite high hopes.

“When David first came, I believed he was committed to what he was doing,” Donovan said. “He cared. He wanted to do well. He wanted the team and the league to do well.

“Somewhere along the way — and in my mind it coincides with Ruud being let go — he just flipped a switch and said, ‘Uh-huh, I’m not doing it anymore’.

“He’s not shown (that he’s a good team-mate). I can’t think of another guy where I’d say he wasn’t a good team-mate, he didn’t give everything through all this, he didn’t still care. But with him, I’d say no, he wasn’t committed.”

Donovan cites Beckham’s desire to move to Italy, which saw him miss half the 2009 MLS season.

“My sense is that David’s clearly frustrated, that he’s unhappy and, honestly, that he thinks it’s a joke,” he said. “I also kind of feel (he has taken the team) for granted. I don’t see dedication or commitment to this team, and that’s troubling.”

Donovan believes it would be best if Beckham, due to make his Galaxy comeback against the New York Red Bulls on July 16 — two days after Wahl’s is published — seal a permanent move back to Europe.

“Let’s say he does stay here for three more years,” Donovan said. “I’m not going to spend the next three years of my life doing it this way. This is miserable. I don’t want to have soccer be this way.”

Benzema had also been linked with Manchester United but now looks set for a switch to the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid have already signed forwards Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka as well as defender Raul Albiol for a combined £148m so far this summer.

Former France and Real Madrid great Zinedine Zidane, who is now a senior advisor at the Spanish club, is believed to have recommended Benzema to club president Florentino Perez after negotiations to sign David Villa from Valencia broke down.

“A few days ago Karim Benzema informed club president Jean Michel Aulas of his desire to move to the Madrid club, which has been his favorite club after Lyon, earlier than he had foreseen.

“The player wanted to seize the opportunity which Real Madrid offered him to be one of the major elements in their new ambitious project based around the greatest players of the world.

“Lyon accepted Karim Benzema’s decision and negotiated the conditions of a transfer which satisfies all the different parties. The club wishes Karim the greatest success with Real Madrid.”

“Lyon announce they have reached an agreement with Real Madrid on the details of the transfer of their international attacker Karim Benzema,” said a statement on the Lyon website.

Benzema joined Lyon’s youth academy at the age of nine and progressed through club’s ranks before making his first-team debut aged 17.

He scored 31 goals in 51 games during the 2007-08 season to finish top scorer in Ligue 1.

Benzema scored 23 goals in all competitions last season but could not prevent Lyon ending the season without league title for the first time in eight years.

Yao Ming injury could “threaten his career”

Less than two weeks ago, Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said the team is committed to building around Yao.

“Yao,” Morey said before the latest test results, “is the cornerstone of our franchise now and in the future.”

Now Morey might have to start rebuilding without him.

Yao, who was hurt during this year’s NBA Western Conference semifinals against the Los Angeles Lakers, is scheduled to visit specialists around the country to choose a course of treatment. He could try a more conservative approach by immobilizing the foot in hopes the hairline fracture in his left tarsal navicular bone will heal on its own, as doctors predicted it would when Yao’s season ended May 8. Because Yao has no pain or other symptoms, Clanton said there is reason to be optimistic that approach could work.

But Clanton also revealed Monday that a CT scan showed Yao’s injury not only failed to heal as expected but has gotten worse, potentially requiring a surgical remedy.

“At this point, the injury has the potential for him missing this next season and could be career-threatening,” Clanton said. “One of the things we are trying to get is a consensus opinion on that, to make certain there is no option we are overlooking that would provide an earlier return or would be an option for treatment that he would prefer rather than doing additional surgery.”

Yao, Rockets owner Leslie Alexander and Yao’s agent, John Huizinga, were unavailable for comment. Morey said he would not discuss Yao’s injury or its ramifications until Yao chooses a treatment option and doctors offer a prognosis.

“We are not going to comment,” NFL jerseys blog Morey said, “until we have all the facts.”

Yao Ming (Chinese: 姚明; pinyin: Yáo Míng; born September 12, 1980 in Shanghai) is a professional basketball player who plays for the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is currently the tallest player in the NBA, at 2.29 m (7 ft 6 in).[1]

Yao, who was born in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China, started playing for the Shanghai Sharks as a teenager, and played on their senior team for five years in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), winning a championship in his final year. He entered the 2002 NBA Draft, and after negotiating with the CBA and the Sharks to secure his release, was selected by the Houston Rockets as the first overall pick of the draft. He has since been selected to start for the Western Conference in the NBA All-Star Game in all seven of his seasons, and has been named to the All-NBA Team five times. However, the Rockets have advanced past the first round of the playoffs only once since he joined the team, and he has missed significant time due to injury in each of the past four seasons.

Yao is married to Ye Li, a former player for the China women’s national basketball team. He is one of China’s best-known athletes, with sponsorships with several major companies, and he has been the richest celebrity in China for six straight years. His rookie year in the NBA was the subject of a documentary film, The Year of the Yao, and he co-wrote, along with NBA analyst Ric Bucher, an autobiography titled Yao: A Life in Two Worlds

Houston Rockets team physician Tom Clanton has said the foot injury currently sidelining Chinese center Yao Ming could threaten the seven-foot-six-inch player’s career. “At this point, the injury has the potential for him missing this next season and could be career-threatening,” Clanton told the Houston Chronicle regional newspaper.

“One of the things we are trying to get is a consensus opinion on that, to make certain there is no option we are overlooking that would provide an earlier return or would be an option for treatment that he would prefer rather than doing additional surgery,” he added.

Yao fractured his left foot last month during a semifinal match against the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Western Conference semifinals and has been visiting specialists ahead of treatment since then.

Clanton continued: “At this stage, he is having no symptoms or physical signs, he has no tenderness, no swelling, no redness. When he came back in, he was feeling like everything was perfect, and he would start rehabilitation and get ready to play.

“The findings on the CT were shocking for him and for us. You don’t treat a CT scan; you treat a patient. We are looking for every reason to treat this on clinical findings but don’t want to put him at risk for a greater fracture,” he added.

The diagnosis raises doubt over the playing future of one of the biggest stars in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and one of the most famous celebrities to hail from China.

Yao is a national hero in his homeland, and the news has prompted a frenzy of postings on the internet, arguing about the why’s and wherefore’s of his injury.

“He is really tired,” says one Netizen posting on Sina.com. “He needs to rest, we cannot let the giant fall!”

“I wish everything will work out well for Yao Ming,” says another teenage basketball fan. “There is always a way to deal with injuries. We should not give up.”

Some Yao supporters think he should take a long break — even for the whole season — and make a comeback later. “I think his injury is very bad,” opines Ma Jian, a TV commentator who played for the Chinese national team.

“With all the weight training the team have put him through in the past seven years, Yao has gained about 20 kilos in his upper body. But his lower body, especially his feet, did not gain much strength to hold his large frame.”

The 28-year-old Yao has been a perennial pick for the NBA All-Star teams since moving from the Shanghai Sharks to the Rockets in 2002.

Yao also captained the Chinese team as hosts at the 2008 Beijing Games, as well as taking the role of flag-bearer in the opening ceremony.

Yao was awarded the honor of “model worker” in 2005 by China’s ruling Communist Party.

However, despite his popularity, Yao still has his share of detractors. Known as “Yao hei” — they are people who are out to smear the player.

“He is a man made of glass,” says one posting on Sina.com. “Should we call him Yao the glass or Yao the porcelain?” asks one rhetorically.

Yao is now a multi-millionaire, earning millions of dollars yearly, not just from his NBA team but from lucrative commercial endorsements.

Admirers say Yao has done more for improving China’s image overseas than any modern-day politician or diplomat. Next to the giant panda, Yao is perhaps China’s best known and much loved, icon, in part because exudes a wholesome, feel-good image.

“He is such an affable, likeable guy,” recalls Colin Pine, who used to serve as his personal translator during his years as an NBA rookie in Houston.

His demeanor on and off the court has endeared him to the media and multitude of basketball fans overseas, who admire his modesty and maturity. His loyal fans hope Yao will get an extension of his already long and successful career.

Ancelotti joined the London club from Milan last month and had hoped Maldini would follow him to Stamford Bridge after hanging up his boots at the end of the season.

 Paolo Cesare Maldini nfl jerseys

Paolo Cesare Maldini (Italian pronunciation: [ˈpaːolo malˈdiːni]; born 26 June 1968 in Milan) is a former Italian footballer who is often considered to be one of the greatest defenders to have ever played the game. Having spent his entire club career at A.C. Milan, Maldini played for 25 years until the age of almost 41. In that time, he was a winning member of seven Italian Serie A championships, one Coppa Italia, five Supercoppa Italiana, five UEFA Champions League Cups, five UEFA Super Cups, two Intercontinental Cups and one FIFA World Club Cup. His key strengths as a player were his electric pace, the ability to execute precision tackles and his leadership influence on and off the pitch. His father is Cesare Maldini, a former player and Milan captain and a successful national U-21 coach.

Maldini is currently the Joint record holder of international appearances, along with Fabio Cannavaro, with 126 caps, since his debut in 1988. He retired from the national team in 2002 after nearly 8 years as team captain.

“There is a bet going that (Chelsea striker Didier) Drogba will learn the Milanese dialect before I learn English and my money is on Drogba,” joked Ancelotti.

Ancelotti, meanwhile, is expected to complete his first signing of the summer this week with the capture of Yuri Zhirkov from CSKA Moscow.

The 25-year-old, a long-time target for the Blues, can play either on the left side of midfield or defense.

Manchester United sign Ecuador winger Antonio Valencia

The 23-year-old Ecuador international has signed a four-year contract after moving for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £16 million ($23 million).

Luis Antonio Valencia Mosquera (born 4 August 1985), commonly known as Antonio Valencia, is an Ecuadorian football winger, who currently plays for Manchester United.[2] He also plays for the Ecuadorian national team.

On 30 June 2009, Valencia became Manchester United’s first summer signing. He finalized his transfer to Old Trafford, having cut his holiday short to have a medical with the club. He has signed a four year contract for an undisclosed fee. However, it was estimated to be up to £16 million.

Valencia is expected to help fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo following the Portuguese winger’s impending 80 million euros ($130 million) move to Real Madrid.

“Joining Manchester United is a dream come true for me,” Valencia told the club’s official Web site.

“I have enjoyed my time at Wigan, but I am thrilled to have the chance to challenge for the biggest honors in club football here.

“Playing in front of 76,000 fans alongside players like Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs will be an amazing experience. I can’t wait to get started with the club.

“I hope the fans at Wigan can understand that I am an ambitious guy and a chance like this might never come again for me,” added Valencia, who will be 24 next month.

“I am happy that the club has benefited from the move financially because I owe them such a lot. I have had a great time here.”

Due to International Support Two Presidents Locked in a Fight

(NFL jerseys)Roberto Micheletti, a 63-year-old businessman and stalwart Liberal Party member, took the oath of office Sunday to replace another Liberal politician, Manuel Zelaya, 56, a rich rancher who was deposed in a predawn raid that day and exiled to Costa Rica.

Mr. Zelaya is a tall man who sports a trademark Stetson. He studied industrial engineering, but dropped out of college to manage his family’s ranches. He served in Congress before running for president in 2006 on a populist platform that blasted the rich and promised to fight crime, corruption and poverty.

Once in power, Mr. Zelaya, who said he had been ignored by the U.S., made a sharp left turn, becoming a close ally and confidant of Venezuela’s populist President Hugo Chávez and Cuba’s Fidel Castro.

Mr. Chávez sent tractors and provided Honduras with financing to buy Venezuelan oil. Last year, as Mr. Chávez promised to supply $300 million in aid to Honduras, Mr. Zelaya made the country a member of the Bolivarian Alternative of the Americas, known by its Spanish acronym ALBA, a trade and political bloc formed by Mr. Chávez to counter U.S. influence in the region. Honduras also has been a member of the U.S.-sponsored Central American Free Trade Agreement, or CAFTA, since 2005.

Mr. Zelaya’s friendships with Mr. Chávez, Mr. Castro, and Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, coupled with his apparent desire to continue in office by rewriting the constitution — as Mr. Chávez has done — put him in direct conflict with Honduras’s Congress, courts, and military. He alienated the media when he dictated that radio and TV stations had to broadcast two hours of government propaganda daily. Businessmen didn’t like measures including a 60% increase in the minimum wage early this year.

Last week, the president insisted on holding a referendum on rewriting the constitution, which critics feared could have led to overturning Honduras’s constitutional ban on re-election. That led to Mr. Zelaya’s forced removal that shocked the region, bringing back bad memories of decades past when it was common for soldiers to make and unmake presidents.

Mr. Micheletti, as president of the Congress, pinned the presidential sash on Mr. Zelaya during his 2006 inauguration. Now he has the almost impossible task of winning international support for his administration until he can be replaced after presidential elections, which already had been scheduled for November.

On Monday, Mr. Micheletti was hard at work. He insisted Mr. Zelaya’s ouster was no coup. “We did not arrive at the presidency with thoughts of vengeance,” he told reporters. “We must seek the unity of Hondurans.”

Mr. Micheletti calls himself a “right-wing progressive” and says he is a good friend of the U.S., which he said has always helped Honduras. Mr. Micheletti has served in political and party posts in five Liberal governments.

A soldier in his youth, he was part of the honor guard of then-President Ramón Villeda Morales, who was overthrown in 1963 by a coup that marked the beginning of almost two decades of military domination of Honduran politics. In the aftermath of that coup, Mr. Micheletti spent some time in prison.

As a rancher and businessman who owns transport companies, Mr. Micheletti had a strained relationship with Mr. Zelaya, whose leftward tilt he opposed.

Mr. Micheletti said in an interview that he is worried by Honduras’s current isolation, and made a plea for understanding from Latin American governments and especially the U.S. “If [the U.S.] does not recognize us, it would be condemning to failure the aspirations of Hondurans,” he said.

If Mr. Zelaya were to return, Mr. Micheletti said, he would have to face the courts on charges of violating the constitution.

Hondurans awoke Monday in a country with two presidents. One, adjusting to his second day of exile, is still recognized by countries around the world. The other, who enjoys the strong backing of all of Honduras’s major institutions, has quickly become a diplomatic pariah.

English club Manchester City made “stratospheric” offer to Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o

City make monster nfl jerseys Eto’o offer

A fee of around 30million euros is expected to see the two clubs agree to do business, with Cameroon ace Eto’o to be tempted by a massive salary offer from the Citizens.

Barca president Joan Laporta told Catalan radio station iCat FM: “Eto’o has a stratospheric offer from City, which would convert him into the best paid player in the world.

“It’s starting to become clear that he has this monster offer. He wants to stay, but an offer like this is very difficult to refuse.

“If Eto’o accepts this stratospheric offer we will have to bring in someone else.”

The 28-year-old, who has one year left on his contract with the Spanish and European champions, has long been linked with the Premier League club.

He has previously said that a move to City did not interest him, but the club’s billionaire owner Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan is determined to finance a deal for the player, who scored 36 goals in Barca’s treble-winning season.

Laporta believes that Eto’o will not be able to turn down such a huge pay package, despite being in negotiations over a new contract at the Nou Camp.

“Eto’o has a stratospheric offer from City, which would convert him into the best paid player in the world,” Laporta told Catalan radio station iCat FM.

“It’s starting to become clear that he has this monster offer. He wants to stay but an offer like this is very difficult to refuse.

“If Eto’o accepts this stratospheric offer we will have to bring in someone.”

City manager Mark Hughes has already brought in England midfielder Gareth Barry in a $20 million deal and signed Paraguay striker Roque Santa Cruz from Blackburn for a reported $30 million.

The Eastlands outfit are also expected to sign Carlos Tevez from city rivals Manchester United after the Argentina forward decided not to accept a new contract with the Premier League champions.

United had agreed to pay the required $42 million to make Tevez’s loan deal permanent, and also offered the player a five-year contract, but he opted to leave Old Trafford, saying he did not feel wanted by the club.

City hope that Eto’o and Tevez will link up with Brazil star Robinho, who was lured to Manchester from Real Madrid last August in a $58 million deal when he had appeared set to join Chelsea.

Eto’o has scored 125 goals in 184 games for Barcelona since joining from bitter rivals Real Madrid for €24 million (now worth $33.7 million) in 2004, having been on loan with Mallorca for the previous two seasons.

Manchester City have made a ’stratospheric offer’ in their attempts to sign striker Samuel Eto’o from European champions Barcelona.

Joe Jackson , the singer’s father, was on hand to represent the family. “I just wish he could be here to celebrate himself,” he said. “Sadly, he’s not here, so I’m here to celebrate for him.”

Already an affair of major star wattage, the night’s show was thrown under a white-hot spotlight in the wake of Jackson’s death Thursday, adding attendees and guests, doubling the number of media requests and even lengthening the red carpet to accommodate all who want to take part.

“No need to be sad. We want to celebrate this black man … We gonna go through all of Michael Jackson,” said Foxx, who came out on stage and re-enacted the choreography from Jackson’s iconic “Beat It” video in front of the star-studded crowd, on its feet from the start of the show.

“There was one thing that this man did that I always wanted to do, and I’m gonna do it tonight. I’m gonna moonwalk,” he said. “I hope I can make it.”

It wasn’t perfect, but it captured the memories of Jackson that the A-list audience shared.

Black Entertainment Television CEO Debra Lee said Sunday’s show will be dedicated to Jackson and pay tribute to his legacy.

“Michael’s influence is felt every day in so many ways at BET Networks, and it’s been that way throughout our network’s entire 29-year history,” she said.

“We watched him grow up and, like everyone around the world, he feels like he is a member of our family.

“He will be missed more than we can say … but his legend and memory live on in the artists, musicians, producers, dancers, fans and everyone else who looks to him for inspiration.”

“We all know none of us in this in this room wouldn’t be here for Michael Jackson,” said Lil Wayne, as he picked up his award for best male hip-hop star.

“My heart and prayers go out to the whole Jackson family,” said basketball star LeBron James, who won best male athlete. “What they did for us, … for the whole world was amazing.”
