Marshall rift with Broncos getting bigger
“Brandon Marshall’s (Brandon Marshall’s NFL jerseys )behavior during practice Wednesday morning and his comments afterward make two things clear: The disgruntled wide receiver still wants out of Denver, and he is not ready to play in a game.
In a candid interview after practice, Marshall admitted he has “trust issues” and is “not being close at all” to grasping the Broncos’ (Broncos NFL jerseys )offensive playbook.
The result is that the rift between the Broncos and their star wideout that began in the spring appears to be growing wider as the regular season draws closer.
Marshall, the Broncos’ most productive receiver each of the past two years and a starter in the Pro Bowl (Pro Bowl NFL jerseys )last season, did not take any repetitions with the first- or second-team offense Wednesday,
working solely with the scout team.
Marshall, who wore a red No. 84 scout-team jersey to simulate Seattle ( Seattle NFL jerseys )wide receiver T.J. Houshmand-zadeh, often stood with defensive or special-teams players, watching quietly as other receivers, from Eddie Royal (Eddie Royal NFL jerseys)and Jabar Gaffney (Jabar Gaffney NFL jerseys )to Chad Jackson (Chad Jackson NFL jerseys )and Matthew Willis(Matthew Willis NFL jerseys ), lined up in offensive sets. Marshall was the first player to leave the field when the 2 1/2-hour practice concluded.”

Bulger injured during Monday practice
The St.Louis Rams (St.Louis Rams NFL jerseys )expect to be without Marc Bulger (Marc Bulger NFL jerseys )for at least two weeks after the veteran quarterback broke the pinkie finger on his throwing hand during practice Monday morning.
The freak injury, described by the team as a non-displaced fracture, occurred during a center exchange. Bulger will not wear a cast while the injury heals.
“We’ll see where we are after that,” Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo said. “He won’t do very much for two weeks, just to be on the safe side.”
Kyle Boller becomes the Rams’ starter while Bulger recovers. Bulger, 32, did not miss a game to injury last season or in 2006. He missed four games in 2007.
Boller, signed in free agency from the Baltmore Ravens (Baltmore Ravens NFL jerseys ), started eight games last season, completing 61.1 percent of his passes with nine touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Boller owns a 20-22 regular-season record as a starter, all with the Ravens. His career passer rating is 71.9.
“It’ll be an opportunity for me to get out there with the ones,” Boller said. “That’s what they brought me in here for, in case something like this happens.”
Bulger was 36-24 as a starter before losing all but four of 27 starts over the last two seasons. The Rams benched him for one game last season.
The Rams’ passing game was already operating at a deficiency before Bulger’s injury. Top receiver Donnie Avery could be sidelined into the regular season after suffering a broken bone in his left foot. Receivers Brooks Foster and Tim Carter suffered less serious injuries during the Rams’ exhibition opener against the New York Jets (New York Jets NFL jerseys ).

Raiders sign veteran CB Ricky Manning Jr.
“The Raiders (Raiders NFL jerseys )signed veteran cornerback Ricky Manning Jr. ( Ricky Manning Jr. NFL jerseys )on Saturday in a move designed to provide more depth.
Manning, 28, spent last season with the St. Louis Rams ( St. Louis Rams NFL jerseys ) . Before that, he played for the Chicago Bears (Chicago Bears NFL jerseys )for two seasons and the Carolina Panthers (Carolina Panthers NFL jerseys ) from 2003-05. He played in Super Bowls with the Panthers and Bears.
Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha said he lobbied on Manning Jr.’s behalf last week and that Manning Jr. is a versatile player.
“He’s more of a physical corner than a speed guy, so that might be a little different from what we had in the past,” Asomugha said. “But he’ll help because he’s done it before. And you know about the games that he’s played, his playoff work and all that stuff, so he can play.”
Manning Jr. stands only 5-foot-9, but he compensates for his lack of height with above-average speed and strength.
“I felt this was a good situation just because it’s closer to home and there’s opportunity here,” Manning Jr. said after his first practice. “There’s always opportunity here for players that come in and play well. It’s a good opportunity for me. I grew up a Raider ( Raider NFL jerseys )fan, so it’s kind of hard for me to say no.”"

Rookies grab the spotlight in Steelers’ victory
As a Super Bowl(Super Bowl NFL jerseys) rematch, the exhibition game between the Steelers( Steelers NFL jerseys) and Arizona Cardinals(Arizona Cardinals NFL jerseys) last night fell flat. Anyone looking for excitement could have found more at the newly opened Rivers Casino next door.
But then, exhibition games often go that way, probably why only 58,330 turned out at Heinz Field last night. It was another example of why the NFL wants to reduce the preseason by two games.
The Steelers( Steelers NFL jerseys), however, won for the second consecutive time over the past six months against the Cardinals, 20-10.
The game was salvaged somewhat in the second half by players who were not playing in a Super Bowl rematch, they were playing in their first professional game. Steelers rookies such as Ziggy Hood(Ziggy Hood NFL jerseys), Joe Burnett(Joe Burnett NFL jerseys), Mike Wallace(Mike Wallace NFL jerseys ) and Isaac Redman(Isaac Redman NFL jerseys ) had to walk out of Heinz Field feeling pretty good about their pro debuts.
Redman scored both touchdowns in short-yardage situations, something he also did Sunday in the team’s only goal-line drill of camp. The undrafted rookie from Bowie State ran one in from 3 yards and the other from 5. Second-year quarterback Dennis Dixon was at the controls for both touchdowns.
Another Pittsburgher accounted for a third touchdown, but he wore red and white. Former Pitt quarterback Tyler Palko(Tyler Palko NFL jerseys ) completed all five passes on a 59-yard drive that ended with his 20-yard touchdown toss to Onrea Jones with 3:30 left in the game.
Both teams went with their starters for two series and both starting groups left with the game scoreless.
“We still have some things to work on,” is how Steelers offensive tackle Max Starks put it.
Ben Roethlisberger completed 4 of the 6 passes he attempted for 33 yards. Backup Charlie Batch was 1 of 2 for 45 yards, and both veterans were done before the end of the first half.
“Overall, without looking at film, I think it was OK,” Roethlisberger said. “I think we had a couple plays with a few breakdowns, but it just felt good to go against someone other than your own guys.”
The best play of the night gave the Steelers the lead for good, and it occurred on the last play of the third quarter with half the fans still in their seats.
Three rookies combined to make it happen. Hood, rushing from left defensive end, put pressure on Arizona quarterback Brian St. Pierre to force a throw that ended up in Burnett’s hands. (Hood, their first draft choice, added a sack of St. Pierre later). Burnett, a fifth-round pick, ran it back 42 yards to the Cardinals’ 3.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Redman ran a nifty off-tackle play, breaking one tackle and bouncing it outside to score. Later in the quarter, he ran two plays in a row, starting at the 9, and scored off right guard from 5 yards out. Combined with his two scores in the goal-line drills at Saint Vincent, Redman looks like a guy who knows the way to the end zone.
There was a burst of excitement at the end of the first half, a near Super Bowl repeat. As in the Super Bowl, the half nearly ended with a long interception return by the Steelers, this time by cornerback Anthony Madison. He picked off Matt Leinart’s pass at the 9 and weaved and ran it back to the 35 before he was tackled with no time outs left.
Not only did Madison fall a tad short of James Harrison’s 100-yard return for a touchdown in the Super Bowl, the interception was taken away from him and he was given a pass-interference penalty in its place.
It took the Steelers’ second-team offense to snap everyone out of it, and Jeff Reed to put them ahead, 3-0, with a booming 50-yard field goal that made it easily.
Batch had a better first exhibition game than he did last preseason when his collarbone was broken on a botched play. Last night, his first series ended with the first score of the game.
Limas Sweed( Limas Sweed NFL jerseys ) made that score possible when he caught a deep pass from Batch that covered 45 yards.
Sweed adjusted nicely along the right sideline, pausing for a slightly underthrown ball to get good position on cornerback Michael Adams. He made the catch at the Arizona 39.
“He is going to grow as a wide receiver and make some big plays for us,” said veteran Hines Ward.
Sweed, trying to replace Nate Washington(Nate Washington NFL jerseys ) as the No. 3 receiver, had two nice catches in the first half, the other a leaping grab in traffic for 11 yards on third down. But he also dropped a third-down pass at the Arizona 8 in the third quarter.
The Cardinals tied the score after Madison’s interference penalty on his interception. Arizona got the ball with no time left on the clock at the Steelers’ 11, and Neil Rackers kicked a 29-yard field goal to send the teams into the break tied, 3-3.
The Steelers had a chance to take the lead on their first possession of the third quarter, but they sent backup kicker Piotr Czech out to try a 36-yarder, and he failed.
Rashard Mendenhall started for the slightly injured Willie Parker (Willie Parker NFL jerseys )at halfback and played the entire first half. He carried nine times for 24 yards and split out wide several times when the first team went to an empty backfield.
Wallace, a third-round pick, caught a nice slant from Dixon in the third quarter for a 22-yard gain to Arizona’s 22 before Czech’s missed field goal and had a second reception for 13 yards.
Czech got a second chance and made good on it when he booted a 44 yard field goal with 1:41 to go.

NFL suspends Cleveland Browns receiver Donte’ Stallworth for 2009 season
“Tony Grossi reports from Cleveland Browns (Cleveland Browns NFL jerseys )training camp this morning that the NFL has suspended wide receiver Donte’ Stallworth for the 2009 season. Tony’s story will post shortly.
Stallworth was suspended indefinitely after he pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter for killing a pedestrian while driving drunk in Miami Beach, Fla., on March 14.
Stallworth met with NFL (NFL jerseys)Commissioner Roger Goodell on Aug. 5 in hopes of being reinstated, a league source confirmed. But the NFL did not make a decision as to what Stallworth’s further discipline may be at that time.
Miami TV station WPLG reported last week that Stallworth showed Goodell surveillance video, which reportedly shows the pedestrian, Mario Reyes, darting out in front of Stallworth’s car outside of a crosswalk.
Last week, Browns(Browns NFL jerseys) coach Eric Mangini declined to comment on whether or not he’d welcome Stallworth back this season.”

Unable to make trade, Falcons cut Vick
ATLANTA — Quarterback Michael Vick’s (Michael Vick’s NFL jerseys) time with the Atlanta Falcons(Atlanta Falcons NFL jerseys ) is officially over.
Vick, who is serving the remainder of his prison sentence on dogfighting charges under house arrest in Virginia, was released by the team Friday.
Before Friday’s announcement — a move that clears Vick to sign with any NFL team — general manager Thomas Dimitroff called the team’s former franchise player.
Dimitroff said Vick, who has missed two seasons while serving a prison sentence for running a dogfighting ring, deserved to hear first about his release. He said Vick “was upbeat” in the short conversation and was looking forward to moving on.
“Respect him as an individual and as an athlete in this profession. It was the right thing to do and I’m happy that we had a conversation today.”
Dimitroff said releasing Vick allows the Falcons “to have a clean slate going into the summer” and allows Vick the freedom to negotiate with other teams.
“I think what we thought about a lot was going into the summer, having a clean slate, not talking about this a lot and not having this be any sort of an issue at all, for Michael, for us,” Dimitroff said. “It was about being positive. It was about moving forward.”
Vick is eligible to immediately sign with a team even though he has not been reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
The Falcons have been trying to trade Vick for months, but found no takers. Instead of holding on to him and hoping that someone would step forward with a trade, they chose to put the Vick era behind them.
The move was no surprise. Owner Arthur Blank has said Vick would not return to the Falcons.
“Everybody always knew that Mike wouldn’t be playing with the Falcons,” Vick’s agent, Joel Segal, said. “He’s really just taking it one day at a time.”
The NFL had no comment on Vick’s release.
Falcons spokesman Reggie Roberts said the team’s release of Vick opens the door for other NFL teams to talk with the quarterback. Roberts said Vick can sign with another team even before Goodell decides on clearing the way for Vick to play.
Goodell has not committed to reinstating Vick after the quarterback completes his 23-month sentence on July 20 for running a dogfighting ring. Vick has been in home confinement since leaving federal prison in Kansas on May 20.
Even while making it clear Vick had no football future with the Falcons, Blank has said he would be available to assist Vick. As an organization Atlanta has turned the page since drafting quarterback Matt Ryan(Matt Ryan’s NFL Jerseys ) ,who went on to become the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year last season.
Vick still will cost the Falcons $6.4 million in salary-cap space.
Vick was the figurehead for the Falcons and, as a dual-threat quarterback, was one of the NFL’s most dynamic stars from 2001 to 2006 before his sudden downfall.
Goodell said last month he would not make a decision on Vick before the end of his sentence.
“Once he’s concluded that, I will make a judgment based on what he tells me and what I can determine from speaking to others and a final background check on this and make a determination at the right time,” Goodell said.
Speculation about Vick’s NFL ( Vick’s NFL jerseys )future started even before his release from the Falcons.
Jim Mora, whose Vick-led team advanced to the NFC Championship Game in 2003, said this week he doesn’t expect Vick to find a job with his Seattle team.
“I’ll just say this for the record: We are very happy with the quarterbacks we have on our roster,” Mora said. “We have no intentions of adding another player to our roster at this time. … Just cut out the ‘at this time,’ because then people will speculate for the next three months. We have no intentions of adding a quarterback to our roster.”
Even as he hopes for reinstatement from Goodell and begins his search for another NFL(NFL jerseys) home, Vick faces other pressing priorities, including his crumbled finances.
On Tuesday, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Frank Santoro set a July 2 deadline for Vick to submit a revised Chapter 11 plan. A hearing to confirm or reject the plan was set for Aug. 27.
Santoro said that if the new plan fails to address the shortcomings that prompted him to reject the first one in April, he will appoint an independent trustee to take over management of Vick’s (Vick’s NFL jerseys )finances.

2009 NFL MVP Predictions
At the end of every season, fifty AP writers sit down and vote for the most valuable player in the NFL. (NFL jerseys)They vote for which player they believe had the biggest impact on their team’s performance that year. In 2008 Peyton Manning ran away with the award with 32 first place votes as he battled back from injury and a slow start to lead his team to an improbable 12-4 record,of course, his NFL jerseys becomes one of the most popular jerseys too.
Here is a NFL preview along with the odds for the top eight MVP hopefuls for the 2009 season.
Ben Roethlisberger +1200
While Big Ben(Ben Roethlisberger’s NFL jerseys) did not figure in the MVP picture last season, he did help the Steelers win their sixth Super Bowl title. While his overall stats are not that flashy, he does have a knack for finding ways to win the game. There are just too many other big named quarterbacks out there for him to break through the pack.
Drew Brees +1200
Brees(Drew Brees’s NFL jerseys) threw for over 5000 yards last season and the Saint’s offense was ranked 1st overall in several categories. His problem was that his team finished the season 8-8 and out of the playoffs. If he can put the same numbers up this season, and the Saints find a way to win 11 or 12 games, he would be my pick for MVP.
Kurt Warner +1400
If a player’s performance in the playoffs was taken into consideration, Warner(Kurt Warner’s NFL jerseys) would have probably received more than one vote for his 2008 effort. The Cardinals unimpressive 9-7 regular season record over shadowed his great season. Unfortunately for Kurt, I think the Cardinals had their day in the sun and will be faced with a big dose of reality in 2009.
Tony Romo +1200
There probably isn’t a quarterback in this league with more pressure on them to win than Tony Romo(Tony Romo s NFL jerseys). This will be Romo’s fourth year as a starter and you get the feeling that Cowboy owner, Jerry Jones’ patience is starting to wear thin. If Romo has a big year and Dallas wins the NFC East, he would be a likely candidate for MVP, but right now that is a very big if.
Donovan McNabb +1400
All the pieces are in place for Donovan McNabb(Donovan McNabb’s NFL jerseys ) to have a big season in Philly. The main concern with him as been his health as last season was only the fourth time in his ten seasons that he started all 16 games. If he stays healthy, McNabb’s chances to win the MVP are as good as anyone’s.
In all likely hoods, the 2009 MVP will be a quarterback as this position has dominated this award over the years.
